Los Angeles, CA – Director and cinematographer Joshua Libertine continues his run of high-profile music visuals with Black Sherif’s “Run Around” a new music video created in collaboration with EMPIRE and produced through Libertine Studios.
The release forms part of the visual world surrounding Black Sherif’s latest album, SUN SHERIF, and brings Libertine together with the Ghanaian artist for a cinematic exploration of love, memory, loss, and the desire to recreate something that can no longer be recovered.
For “Run Around,” Libertine built the visual around the idea of searching for a love that can no longer physically exist. Inspired in part by the emotional world of Black Sherif’s “Oh Paradise,” the story follows Sherif as he attempts to reconstruct the feeling and memory of a past love through science.
“It’s almost like trying to scientifically reconstruct a memory,” Libertine explains.
Rather than treating “Run Around” as an isolated music video, Libertine approached the project as part of Black Sherif’s broader creative world. He worked closely with Sherif and his team to understand the artist’s creative direction, the music surrounding the project, and how the visual could contribute to an ongoing narrative.
“You can make something beautiful, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re contributing to the larger story of the artist,” Libertine says. “Understanding where an artist has been and where they’re going allows you to create something that actually belongs in their world.”
That creative alignment became a defining part of the collaboration. Libertine, Sherif, and their respective teams found a natural rhythm throughout the process, allowing many of the video’s more intimate emotional details to emerge organically.
“Run Around” marks another addition to Libertine’s growing body of work across music and visual storytelling. His previous credits include collaborations with artists such as Coco Jones and Jhené Aiko, as well as serving as Director of Photography on Muni Long’s “Hrs & Hrs,” which won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.
With “Run Around,” Libertine continues to develop a visual language centered on cinematic storytelling, emotional depth, and close collaboration with artists – while expanding a body of work that moves fluidly between music, culture, and film.
