From Opera to Canvas: Elena Kozhevnikova’s Creative Journey Across Art, Fashion and Design
Elena Kozhevnikova has built a career that moves across several creative disciplines. An artist, fashion and jewellery designer, photographer and former opera student, she draws on a varied education and professional background that spans music, fashion, sociology and visual art.
Born on 29 March 1965 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, Kozhevnikova began her formal artistic training at the Rostov Specialized School of Arts, graduating in 1986. Five years later, she completed her studies at the Rostov State Conservatoire, specialising in opera singing as a mezzo-soprano. Since 1991, she has lived and worked in Moscow.
Her path later took her into fashion and design. In 2003, she became creative director of the Russian Golf Association and launched GOLFOREST, a luxury golf clothing line. The role brought together her interest in design and the practical demands of developing a clothing concept for a specific audience.
In 2005, Kozhevnikova co-founded what was described as Russia’s first golf-related awards. The following year, she introduced her eponymous concept clothing line, Elena Kozhevnikova, and participated in the international Volvo Moscow Fashion Week.
Her studies continued alongside her professional work. In 2003, she completed a course at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London. She graduated from Moscow State University in 2004, specialising in the sociology of fashion. These experiences added further context to her work in clothing and design, bringing together creative practice and an interest in how fashion operates within society.
Jewellery became another part of her practice in 2008, when she created her first concept collection. That year, she also designed the prize for Fashion Fringe, a British competition for emerging designers. The project extended her work beyond clothing into objects that combine visual design with a distinct purpose.
Kozhevnikova’s interests also reached into interior design. From 2009 to 2011, she designed several luxury apartments, incorporating her own paintings and collages into the interiors. Her artwork became part of the spaces themselves, rather than remaining separate decorative pieces.
A more direct focus on her visual art followed in 2012. Encouraged by friends and professional partners, she launched a website to present work made using mixed media, oil and pastel. The move provided a dedicated platform for sharing her artistic practice beyond her work in fashion and interiors.
Since 2013, Kozhevnikova has been represented by Agora Gallery in New York and Artist’s Haven Gallery in Florida, according to her professional biography. Her work has thus maintained a presence in both the Russian creative scene and the US gallery landscape.
Her career does not follow a single, conventional route. Music, fashion, jewellery, interiors and painting have each formed part of her professional experience. Rather than being defined by one discipline, Kozhevnikova’s background reflects an ongoing engagement with different forms of visual and creative expression.
Kozhevnikova’s story is one of creative development across disciplines. From her early training in the arts and opera to her work in fashion and her later focus on painting, each stage has contributed to a career shaped by a broad range of interests and experiences.
