WALT Method Targets Building New Brain Skills for a Healthier Lifestyle
The Weight and Lifestyle Transformation (WALT) Method has launched a new approach to losing weight, by targeting executive function skills to overcome mental challenges related to successful weight loss. Recent studies by The Ohio State University have shown the importance of executive function in maintaining a weight loss plan, especially for women who are overweight or obese.
The Weight and Lifestyle Transformation Method (WALT Method) is a new and novel approach to weight loss that targets building executive function skills to overcome cognitive issues that can derail weight loss plans. Recent studies by The Ohio State University have shown the importance of cognitive control, such as the ability to manage stress, manage emotions and tolerate discomfort, to be successful with a weight loss plan.
Dr. Stewart Zelman, founder of the WALT Method, has helped clients build executive functioning skills relevant to weight loss for more than 35 years. “We clearly see that our clients who build skills around managing thoughts and feelings, and better ways of dealing with stress, are more successful overall both in losing weight and keeping it off.”
Studies suggest that executive function deficits are more common in women who are overweight or obese. This can result in difficulties in making detailed plans and sticking to them, engaging in unhealthy eating habits, and an inability to change those habits without intervention. The WALT Method, through its online assessment and 10-module course, focuses on building new skills and connections in the brain to enable people to resist eating from emotional upset, stress, boredom, and others.
Mei-Wei Chang, associate professor of nursing at Ohio State, said, “People with a higher stress level tend to have a higher fat intake, too. If stress is high, we’re so stressed that we don’t think about anything or care about what we eat. That’s why we focused on executive functions as a mediator between stress and diet. And with this baseline data, we believe that designing an intervention around executive functions could improve dietary outcomes.”
The WALT Method enhances cognitive control through focus on 10 dimensions directly related to weight loss, including self-image, body image, stress management, better control of thoughts and feelings, and others. This approach gives people better resources, so they are able to follow a healthier diet, maintain lower stress levels, and generally be more effective with any weight loss program.
Previous research has shown cognitive training does improve executive function, and in support of this research, the WALT Method course was developed to deliver learning and knowledge-sharing that targets improving executive function skills, because they are so critical to achieving long-term healthy eating habits. The WALT Method addresses the underlying issues of emotional eating and helps develop a balanced relationship with food. The program delivers a personalized and practical approach to achieving a healthier lifestyle by enhancing skills and building new connections in the brain.
